Kit Grauer is actively involved in art education organizations at the local, national and international levels. She has held executive positions in the BC Art Teachers Association, Canadian Society for Education through Art, National Art Education Association as Director in Higher Education and the Chair of the NAEA Teacher Education Research Task Force and numerous executive positions in the International Society for Education through Art including President. She is also very involved with art education publications and has been on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Review of Research and Issues in Art Education, The Canadian Art Teacher, Art Education, Cat's Cradle, Journal of Aesthetic Education and is the former Editor of InSEA News.

Dr. Grauer's interests include arts-based and image-based research, international issues in art education, teacher education and art curriculum and instruction. She has done numerous presentations, in service sessions and keynote speeches in these areas. Her current research includes the use of artistic pedagogical strategies in both pre service and inservice teacher education, museum education and community based education. Her previous interests on the beliefs of pre service teachers toward art education and changing beliefs of artists, teachers and researchers involved in artist in the schools programs (http://ijea.asu.edu/v2n9/) have largely influenced the new set of studies she is currently engaged in researching.

In 2008, Kit Grauer (PI), David Darts (NYU), Sandra Weber (Concordia) and Celeste Snowber (SFU) secured a standard SSHRC grant to work on a project entitled "The Art of New Media Education: A Study of Community-based New Media Arts Education."

In 2004, Rita Irwin (PI), Carl Leggo, Peter Gouzouasis and Kit secured a standard SSHRC grant to investigate the use of integrative arts strategies within diverse learning environments. This work is taking them into elementary and secondary art, music and writing and generalist classrooms as they endeavour to work with teachers and students to learn how they might develop more robust knowledge over time through the arts. Kit is currently working with Helen Robertson in Delta Elementary Schools and Julie Lymburner in a Secondary art setting. The study employs a/r/tographical research methods that include a variety of qualitative research data collection strategies and forms of analysis. Much of the work is image based using digital photography. An exciting addition to this study is a newly developed Elementary Teacher Education cohort in the one year elementary program at UBC. Partially funded by the Dean’s office, Lynda Hamilton, and Kit Grauer, to honor the memory of Margaret Grauer, this cohort entitled “Teaching From the Heart”, has beginning teachers working with artists at UBC and in their practicum schools. Heather McKay and Catherine Johnson are the faculty advisors and Alex de Cosson and Kathryn Ricketts are the artists.

Also in 2004, Co-Investigators Ruth Beer (Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design), Rita Irwin (PI), Gu Xiong (UBC Dept. of Art, Theory and Art History), collaborator Stephanie Springgay (Penn State University), and Kit Grauer secured a strategic research/creation SSHRC grant entitled: The “City of Rich Gate: Research and Creation into Community-Engaged Arts Practices.” This SSHRC study unites artistic production, education and artistic/research investigations with issues of identity, place and community in the city of Richmond where the population has dramatically shifted toward an Asian base. The artistic and pedagogical significance for this study resides in exploring this geographically and culturally hybrid site as a site for creating community. “The Grauer Story” on Kit’s home page is an example of this work.

A UBC Hampton Grant (with Carl Leggo (PI) and Co-Investigators Kit Grauer, Rita Irwin, Peter Gouzouasis seeks to archive all of the arts-based research work that has occurred, or is occurring, in the Faculty of Education at UBC, while also attempting to further develop the methodology of a/r/tography in greater depth (across the arts).
For further information of the A/r/tography projects please see the a/r/tography website http://m1.cust.educ.ubc.ca/Artography/

For immediate information on the Research/Creation SSHRC project, please see the brochure accompanying the art exhibitions in Chongqing and Beijing China in June 2005: http://m1.cust.educ.ubc.ca/Artography/richgate.pdf

Kit Grauer has been heavily involved with the graduate program in art education and the teacher education program at UBC and is now focusing her teaching in the secondary art teacher education program, (smART), the Elementary program “Teaching from the Heart”, the gallery and museum certificate program with collaborative courses with the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Anthropology Museum. She is Chair of Art Education at UBC.

In recent years, Kit Grauer has been awarded the NAEA/BC Art Educator Award; the NAEA Pacific Region Art Education Award; the UBC Killam Teaching Excellence Award; the Alma Mater Society "Just Desserts" service award; the CSEA Gaitskell Award, the UBC Sam Black Award for Education and Development in the Arts, the USSEA Ziegfeld International Award, the AERA Award for Best Publication in an Electronic Journal, the George Cedric Metcalf Foundation Award for Excellence in Research and the UBC Murray Elliot Award for Teacher Education.
